5 MAYA ANGELOU QUOTES & HOW THEY’VE HELPED ME DURING LOCKDOWN

We all have those writers, philosophers, poets or motivational speakers that seem to really resound with us. People who see the world in a similar way to the way that we see it, have perhaps encountered similar internal struggles or external hardships. We can read words written or spoken by those thought-leaders or wordsmiths and we just immediately ‘get’ them. This past year hasn’t been easy for many businesses and has been downright terrifying for many. However, when I stepped back to look at what I hoped for in 2021, words from poet and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou kept returning. So, I thought it might be a good article to include for those looking for inspiration, comfort and focus during a time when we are being bombarded by more negative news. I’ll admit that I’m a bit of an optimist, I don’t think things are ever truly hopeless, because with tenacity, flexibility & creativity, who knows?

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou

Things have been difficult this past year. We’re all feeling it in different ways. To me this quote reflects a multitude of situations and asks the questions: “Can you change it?” and, if not, “what are you going to do about it?” I appreciate that, because we all need a reminder to focus on those actionable things rather than the ones we can’t change. So, stay positive and keep moving forward.

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
Maya Angelou In an age of Instagram envy and perfectly staged social media moments, it’s really easy to think that these moments are effortless and, when looking at competitors, that they have a secret recipe that you’re lacking. The bottom line is that seamless anything takes hard work, time, patience and skill. There’s no getting around it, to attain beautiful results, you need to put the work in.
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” – Maya Angelou
How are you measuring success? I think it’s important to like what you do – whether you’re doing it full-time, part-time or as a hobby – do things that spark joy.
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou
Why should learning stop when we finish high school or university? Having a flexible mind is one of life’s greatest gifts and my hope is that you’ll be open to new ideas and unique ways. Stay flexible. Do better.
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” – Maya Angelou
I don’t think I need to say much more about this. I’ve shared this before and it’s one of my core values: to keep an open mind, no stupid ideas and big-sky thinking.
